Meet our team
Doug’s background of 37 years as a manufacturing engineer, combined with his knowledge of computerised design and his natural artistic creativity proved to be the perfect combination for the business. All embroidery and design is produced in house and on Harris.
At first glance, Kate’s previous career as a nurse may not seem to translate to the business as readily. But her highest standards and attention to detail are constantly in use, whilst expanding her creative hobbies into a successful business. Her love of colour and nature are very evident in the artwork produced.

What we do
Within a year, the home-grown business had moved into a small business unit owned by The West Harris Trust – but with their continued growth, a new larger venue was soon required.
In July 2018, renovation of their permanent base at Ardhasaig.commenced and Ardhasaig Glass & arts opened to the public on December 10th. A 50-year-old neglected barn has been transformed into the perfect location to incorporate both embroidery and glass studios, with a Gallery displaying all of the artwork made on the premises. With stunning views of West Loch Tarbert it is an idyllic location.
Who We Are
Having been together for 38 years, Doug and Kate’s move to the Isle of Harris in 2015 was an ideal opportunity to start another type of partnership – The Hebridean Design Company.
THDCo. owned and run by partners Doug and Kate, was set up in February 2016. Initially offering machine embroidered design and artwork. Their services range from bespoke commissions, corporate work wear, pet portraiture to personalised clothing and gifts. But is mainly focussed on unique designs embroidered on to Harris Tweed.
In August 2017, Doug’s long-time interest in glass fusing became a new arm to the business. Visitors and Hearrachs all appreciating Doug’s artistic flare, combined with his knowledge of thermal processes and natural talent for drawing inspiration from the Harris landscape.
